“Giraffes”

Continuing south, you will see a sculpture titled “Giraffes” by American sculptor Henry Mitchell (1915- 1980). It was a gift from Mrs. Eileen Zantzinger Holberg in memory of her husband Alfred Zantzinger.

Henry Mitchell was a prominent and revered presence in the Philadelphia art community from the early 1950's until his death in 1980. His work is found in numerous public spaces in Philadelphia, major institutions such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and distinguished private collections. Although at times Mitchell used the human figure and abstract forms as the subject of his work, he is known primarily for his sculptures of animals which all share a simplistic form and depict the gentleness of nature.
