The Lido lighthouse reminds us that Venice was the Bride of the Adriatic. It is a symbol of home and safety. The sky is as white as that of a Bernd and Hilla Becker photograph, with which this has much in common. The tonally differentiated tiers of the symmetrical tower, its hierophantic presence like one de Chirico’s towers, and its contrast with the mortar-like blocks of the seawall make this one of Angeli’s most memorable compositions.
