At the southern-most point of the quartzite matrix, is a sculpture called “Maternidad-La Cueva, Homage to Zuniga” by Mexican sculptor Felipe Castaneda (b. 1933). It was a gift from Mrs. Richard Harrison Hill, Philip Hulitar and Mrs. Bradford A. Whittemore.
Castaneda studied under, and worked as an assistant to, the world famous artist Francisco Zuniga who he pays homage to in the title of this work. During his long career, Castaneda has exhibited throughout Mexico, the United States and Europe receiving many honors. Considered a master sculptor, his preferred subject matter is the female form; especially the sensuous mestiza woman, capturing all her states of being with great feeling.
