Eduard Angeli (Austrian, b. 1942)
The House with the Loudspeaker, 2012
Charcoal, chalk, and sanguine on canvas
Collection of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank
This weird vision of a bleak and shuttered house adorned with a public address system is based on an actual sighting by Angeli, as are all his painting. It is transformed by his rigorous simplifications. Any speculation of what activities may be conducted around this building (a government office? a beach? a pizzeria?) are rendered futile. The disembodied voice, transmitting orders, is Kafkaesque.
