The horizontals of sea and sky are favorite motifs of Angeli’s. They are the vehicle for subtle and dramatic color contrasts. Something usually animates the horizon—an island, distant lights, a passing ship or, in this case, the rising of the solar orb into a pale sky over dark blue, gray and green waters. Sunrises and sunsets are ubiquitous in Symbolist imagery, representing the passing of time, renewal, spiritual states, cycles of life and so forth.
